What is Ethics? Ethics comes from the Greek word Ethos. Ethos can mean custom, habit, character, or disposition. Due to the various possible meanings, ethics can cover several topics. One’s ethics can derive from religion, traditions, beliefs, and may vary per situation. My preferred definition comes from Plato. Plato raises the question, â€Å"What sort of person should I be? Eudaimonia is also a Greek word meaning living well and having a good soul. Plato focused on the well-being of the soul. Plato characterized the soul in three parts: reason, spirit, and appetite. According to Velasquez et al, â€Å"Some years ago, sociologist Raymond Baumbart asked business people, â€Å"What does ethics mean to you?† Among their replies were the†¦show more content†¦With so many cultures, backgrounds, religions, etc there will be various views on ethics, beliefs, and traditions. Whether or not to use animals for scientific testing, food, or fur is an ethical deba table topic. Both sides will have valid points and believe whole heartedly in their views, but which side is ethically right? Ethics can be compromised or come into question depending on the situation. Even when trying to be a good person and making good morally right decisions, ethics can come to play when trying to decide what’s best for now; in the moment and for all people involved. â€Å"Ethical dilemmas have a way of sneaking up on a person. If something smells funny, stay away from it or help get rid of it† – Price Pritchett I believe our conscious, intuition, or gut feeling will help guide our ethical decision making. The feeling of what is right or wrong will come up from memory or common sense, the perception of what is considered â€Å"the right thing to do† with instinctive feelings about a given situation. â€Å"You can’t put someone else, in charge of your morals. Ethics is a personal discipline. –Price Pritchett Ethics is a system of moral principles that affect how people lead their lives.
